JRC launches new marine radar with ConstaviewTM technology

Japan Radio Company Ltd (JRC) is proud to launch the JMA-5300 series marine radar system which has been developed specifically for large or medium sized workboats, fishing and other commercial vessels.

The JMA-5300 series has been developed to meet all the radar and ATA / ARPA performance standards as specified by the IMO, as well as offer greatly enhanced performance, user-friendliness and visibility. It is delivered as standard with Constaview™ technology which utilizes digital signal processing software powered by a high performance computer system in order to simultaneously rotate a radar echo image as a vessel turns when the user is operating in Real-Time Head-Up mode. The JMA-5300 series also features Target Enhancement Function™ (TEF), target acquisition, and tracking of up to 100 separate targets when in ATA/ARPA mode.

JRC expects to deliver 500 systems in 2004, predominantly to the workboat and fishing vessel market, where operators require high sensitivity and short distance detection performance.

FEATURES

The JMA-5300 series represents a major advance in radar technology. The newly developed processing system gives users a range of new features not previously found on this class of radar.

Sector Adaptive Sea Clutter

Conventional marine radars use a single Sea Clutter level for generating radar images, but the highly advanced processor used in the JMA-5300 series has the capability to simultaneously use different levels of Sea Clutter in various sectors of the radar image. This capability is especially useful when navigating in coastal waters with land on one side of the vessel, and imparts a significant contribution to safe navigation.

Target Enhancement Function™ (TEF)

Developed exclusively by JRC, TEF™ allows better identification of small and/or weak echoes. Equally, coastlines appear with improved definition. TEF™ works by adding pixels to targets displayed on the radar image and allows a vastly improved degree of target discrimination. Furthermore, the system processes results with proportional enhancement, meaning that the relative enhancement of smaller targets is greater than that applied to larger targets. TEF™ is available in three levels – x5, x9 and x17.

Constaview ™

Constaview™ makes it possible to switch between different operational views (i.e. North-up to Head-up, scrolling or off-center), and because all the information gathered by the radar is stored internally by the system, the transition from one view to another is instantaneous. Furthermore, during range changes the picture is updated after only one scan. Targets that need to be closely followed can easily be re-identified on the new image. Constaview™ represents a major contribution to safety and operational flexibility.

  1. TRUE TRAILS
    Constaview™ refreshes the image every 16 mS. Despite heading changes trails are always true.
  2. RELATIVE TRAILS
    Traditional technology relies on several sweeps of the scanner to redraw the image.  Trails are presented as relative.

Clear on-screen information

Menu selection, via the keyboard or trackball, is clearly shown on the display – allowing at-a-glance interpretation of the radar image. A wide-screen option is also available for the whole of the display to be used for radar image presentation, whilst important information remains visible.

On every presentation mode – overlays C-Map NT+ charts over any radar presentation.

Flexible Black Box configuration with 18-inch color TFT display

The system comprises of a high-brightness TFT color LCD display, a dedicated keyboard and a signal processor unit of A4 size (excluding scanner unit) all designed in the Black Box style. The components can be freely arranged but would ideally be installed flush-mount on a console or bulkhead.
