Japan's First Parametric Rolling Prediction System Now Available

Written by JRC | 2026.04.16

Japan Radio Co., Ltd. proudly announces the launch of the Anti-Parametric Rolling System (APRS), the first system of its kind in Japan*1 that utilizes cutting-edge RADAR wave analysis technology and ship motion models. APRS supports the visualization and avoidance of parametric roll*2 occurrence risks for large commercial vessels, including container ships, achieving advanced accident prevention and operational optimization.

Background

In recent years, as container ships and car carriers that support global logistics have grown larger, accidents involving container loss and cargo damage caused by "parametric roll" occurring at sea have been increasing. The conditions for occurrence are particularly complex and difficult to predict, making countermeasures challenging based solely on crew judgment. Furthermore, starting in 2026, immediate reporting obligations for container loss will be internationally strengthened, requiring more advanced safety measures and risk management.

About APRS

APRS performs high-precision analysis of parametric roll occurrence risk using wave data obtained from existing X-band RADAR and optimized ship-specific motion models. The system visualizes risk areas around the vessel using polar charts and provides real-time optimal course and speed options.

Key Features

  • Visualization of Risk Areas
Real-time detection of ship motion with risk area visualization and optimal course/speed recommendations
  • 24/7 Wave Monitoring
Reliable 24-hour wave monitoring with RADAR even during nighttime or poor visibility conditions
  • Automatic Wave Height Measurement
Automatic measurement and quantification of swells and wave heights for objective situation assessment
  • Easy Implementation
Simple installation on the bridge utilizing existing RADAR equipment

Implementation Benefits

  • Prevention of Serious Accidents
Avoids parametric roll risk areas, preventing container loss and cargo damage
  • Reduction of Operational Burden
Reduces crew judgment stress, skill gaps, and workload through automatic monitoring and objective data
  • Suppression of Damage Costs and Environmental Impact
Reduces accident response costs and environmental risks. Contributes to strengthened risk management for new international regulations
  • Ease of Implementation
No major modifications required by utilizing existing RADAR systems, enabling quick and cost-effective operation startup

*1: Based on our research (as of April 2026)

*2: Parametric Rolling
Parametric rolling is a phenomenon in which a ship's stability (righting lever) varies periodically due to waves, causing sudden and significant amplification of the roll motion. When the timing of the ship's vertical motion (heaving/pitching) synchronizes with its rolling, the oscillation can increase drastically. In large container ships, this poses a risk of container collapse or capsizing. It is currently recognized as one of the critical maritime safety challenges for modern large-scale vessels.
