First of all, I pray for those people who perished in the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 that their souls may rest in peace. Moreover, I would like to express my sympathy to all sufferers and hope for successful restoration of affected areas at the earliest possible opportunity.
Since its founding in 1915, Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (JRC) has honed its information-communication technologies, having distributed numerous products worldwide. We are aggressively promoting the protection of the global environment and contributions to society, as well as helping develop society through business. From local disaster prevention to ships navigating all global seas, the radio communication technologies of JRC provide safety and security to people worldwide.
We have proceeded with environmentally-friendly corporate activities, upholding the basic concept behind the environment policy; namely that “we act considering global environmental conservation at all stages of business operations; aware that global environmental conservation is one of the key issues common to humanity”. In addition, we have become a subsidiary of Nisshinbo Holdings Inc., which advocates being an eco-company, since December 29, 2010 to pursue efforts to further enrich environmental practices as a member of the Nisshinbo group.
As "marine-oriented JRC", examples of marine equipment businesses include the realization of safety and efficient navigation via navigation systems consisting of advanced communication and navigation equipment and rational and economical operation corresponding to changes in ocean currents and ecosystems accompanied by global warming via electronic equipment for fisheries and others. Also, in the communication equipment business, examples include CO2 reduction by facilitating a sophisticated mobility society, e.g. by relieving traffic congestion using in-vehicle ETC systems, and in the solutions business, efforts to protect the local environment using various control systems for waters, river and dams, etc., saving energy at data centers via high-voltage DC supply systems, comprehensive support for emergency measures and disaster restoration via information-communication systems for disaster prevention. On the occasion of the Great East Japan Earthquake this time and also the Niigata prefecture Chuetsu-oki Earthquake in 2007, we supported disaster-stricken areas by helping secure communication routes, lending radio equipment and portable satellite communication equipment to devastated municipalities.
Reviewing social conditions, reducing energy consumption during summer and winter is also continuously required in future to cope with the tight energy supply and demand caused due to the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Nationally, corporate responsibility for generated waste intensified following the revision of the Waste Disposal Law. In addition, additional control of restricted substances was required following the revision of the RoHS Directive overseas. Companies must address global environmental conservation more aggressively and multilaterally than ever to meet those social responsibilities.
We defined the greatest support for the basis of the addressing the environment as ISO for the environment, and in concrete terms, our activities this fiscal year center on five environmental objectives and targets, including the "expansion of environmentally-conscious products", "promotion of green procurement" and "progression of global warming prevention measures". We intend to continue efforts to achieve these targets one-by-one; addressing the contents of the activities, including achieving a 100% application rate for the new evaluation criteria for JRC's Type II Environmental Label to new, originally planned and developed products (Kan Teki Sen II-1101) by fiscal 2013 in the technological development domain, maintaining zero emissions in the production field and reducing energy consumption company-wide.
According to the energy consumption performance in fiscal 2010, the reduction in the energy consumption per production unit of 4.2% compared to the previous fiscal year was achieved, exceeding the target of 3.8% for environmental conservation activities at the production factory. However, this target energy consumption per production unit was achieved due to the 5.4% increase in production, even though total energy consumption increased by 1.0% compared to the previous fiscal year. Therefore, further energy-saving efforts are required. In addition, regarding activities to reduce the product-related environmental load, the application rate of conformance to the Type II Environmental Label was 20%, marking a failure to achieve the target of 90% or more. Further efforts in this aspect are also required. To establish a control system for substances contained in products, the full-fledged operation of the hazardous chemical substances aggregation system (J-COSMOS) introduced in the second half of fiscal 2007 commenced and is expected to contribute significantly to the investigation of toxic substances and the design of environmentally-conscious products.
In fiscal 2011, we are considering implementing the promotion of environmental contribution businesses as well as energy-saving and conformance to the new evaluation criteria of the Type II Environmental Label.
