1. The completion ceremony of the Enhancement Plan of the Maritime Safety Communications System in the Philippines

On Monday, April 27, 2009, the completion ceremony of the "Enhancement Plan of the Maritime Safety Communications System in the Philippines" was held at the transmitting station of the Philippine Coastal Guard (PCG) in Lungsod ng Taguig, Metro Manila. The coast of the Philippines, an island nation, is a vital marine area, which many international cargo ships, including Japanese-registered vessels, navigate through. However, a number of accidents have occurred every year in this area, claiming valuable human lives and leading to environmental contamination caused by oil leakages or other environmental impacts. Furthermore, there is an increasing number of crimes, including smuggling of drugs, guns and other illegal items, illegal fishing using bombs, and piracy in this area, making significant impacts on Japan. By accelerating the communication of information, this system is expected to substantially shorten the time from warning of marine accidents / crime to the decision to act.
